I happened to see a Hunter Cub (JA65) tracker custom on social media. It was a short video that was apparently shot at a show, and it was really cool. It was refreshing to see its new style, not to mention the level of perfection, and it was one of the best Hunter Cub customs I have ever seen. So, I just have to introduce this awesome CT125 Tracker Custom by the team at Webike Taiwan!
Webike Taiwan 10th Anniversary Hunter Cub Custom
First, we have the photo used at the top of this article and one of the bike being ridden. These are the two photos from Webike Taiwan's article that show the completed bike in full.
■A shot from the show where the bike was displayed. Hats off to the team for getting so close to the tracker style without modifying the frame.
■The fuel tank is relocated to the main frame and stylishly reflects the surrounding scenery.
The first thing that catches the eye is the seat that brings together the tracker style look. And the next is the fuel tank that is mounted on top of the main frame. This is the result of removing the stock fuel tank in order to install the tracker seat. One might think that it would be better to cut and weld the tank to fit it rather than making a one-off tank. But in fact, for this bike the team tasked themselves with making a custom that could be used on a daily basis and returned to the stock condition. Let's take a closer look at the details.
■CG image created for the production project. It looks really cool!
The CG image shows that the production team started the project with a very specific image in mind, including the selection of parts to be installed. The overall silhouette was determined by the front and side race number bases, meter relocation, and tracker seat. The suspension system was kept almost stock, while large-diameter discs were used to create a racer look. The front fender was probably intended to be a one-off.
■Removal of the fuel tank to decide the positioning of the tracker seat
In order to get a layout with the tracker seat as low as possible, it would end up in the same spot as the original fuel tank. However, cutting and welding the tank back on would cause various problems, and most importantly, it would be impossible to return the bike to the stock form. Therefore, a new fuel tank was built to achieve the tracker silhouette.
■A one-off fuel tank is mounted on top of the main frame. At this point, ZETA handlebars are installed.
Even if the fuel tank is just relocated, the engine cannot be started by simply connecting a hose as with a carbureted bike because of the complex control of the injection system. The solution was to relocate the entire control system of the stock tank.
■The control system from the stock tank is relocated to the one-off fuel tank
By completely removing the parts on the top surface of the tank, the tracker seat is placed as low as possible. Of course, the seat cannot be installed as is, so they had to start by making the base.
■A one-off mounting bracket for the seat was made on the seat rail
If it were just to install the tracker seat, a simpler shape would work, but since the stock seat rail could not be cut, I am guessing the box shape was used to hide it.
■The tracker seat itself is also heavily modified to make it the right size for a Hunter Cub.
At this point, there is what appears to be a cut-out for passing the turn signals through at the rear edge of the seat. This area has also been cut and modified to a simpler shape that better fits the Hunter Cub. The front side also appears to have been cut down to a much smaller size.
■The number plates which greatly add to the tracker look
The front and side number plates, which are indispensable for tracker customization, are of course one-offs. They are made by laser-cutting steel plates. The brackets are also one-offs, of course, and the headlight was converted to a more compact size.
■Paint and stickers are applied to complete the tank
The one-off tank consists of the tank body and the red part on top. This looks like a lid which can be opened to reveal the fueling port.
■Completed tracker seat. Lots of modification work must have gone into it, but the finished product is outstanding.
The seat has been installed, and the cowl portion is finished with a paintjob and stickers. This completes the one-off exterior custom parts. The black box-like part behind the license plate is the one-off seat base that was made earlier. The seat rails would normally be exposed here, so they are neatly placed in the box.
■The engine area, including around the oil filter, has also been extensively modified.
According to the original CG image, they had planned to install a Tactical Cyclone, but in the end a GP Magnum Cyclone was chosen. The Cyclone for the JA65 is now on the market, but at the time they were creating this custom, it was only available for the JA55. It could not be installed as is due to interference with the oil filter, so a part of the exhaust pipe was cut and rewelded to just barely get around it.
Details of Installed Parts
I got the information on parts installed from the Webike Taiwan article, however, there are a few parts that were not listed, so I've gathered as much information as I could find. First, the handlebars.
■The CG concept image utilized the stock handlebars, but that point has been largely modified. In particular, the tapered bar contributes to the race-like impression.
The handlebar is a ZETA SX3; it is a tapered bar, so it goes through a conversion clamp. The brake lever is also a ZETA pivot lever. The hand guards are by POLISPORT.
■Since a tapered bar was used the turn signals have also been changed.
The front and rear turn signals are Highsider Little Bronx. The rich color blends very well with the Glowing Red of the Hunter Cub. Since they are so tiny and low-profile, and the colors are so close, it looks like a racer at a quick glance.
Although the direction is different from the original dirt track spec, the disc is emphasized as it can also be used for daily use. The SP TAKEGAWA big disc rotor kit enhances braking power while at the same time providing racer styling. The rim stickers are TYPE A by YOSHIMURA.
Now let's take a look at the engine. The oil cooler is made by SP TAKEGAWA, and since it is specially designed for the JA65, it fits beautifully in the underpipe even though the JA65 doesn't have much room for installation.
■The engine area has a strong custom look with a focus on YOSHIMURA parts.
On the right side of the engine, the crankcase cover, which gives a particularly big impression, is made by YOSHIMURA. In addition, the aforementioned oil cooler outlet strongly shows off the mechanical look. The oil filler cap is made by DAYTONA. The head cover on the left side is also made by YOSHIMURA, and the red anodized plugs give it a more sophisticated appearance.
■The shortened air intake and rear suspension are eye-catching.
The rear suspension is a KITACO x Gears collaboration model, a gem with rebound damping adjustment as well as preload. The tires are IRC GP-22, which have a good reputation for off-roading, and the air intake area looks like the stock snorkel was removed and a ZETA conversion duct was added.
■Gold is used for the drivetrain as an accent color.
The chain is an EK seal chain, black and gold in color. It combines a rich visual charm with long life. Driven sprockets are from the XAM premium series. Hard anodized aluminum, molybdenum disulfide, and Teflon coating are used to significantly reduce friction resistance.
Among the wide variety of Hunter Cub customizations, the tracker style has not been done that much. This custom Hunter Cub by Webike Taiwan is a very well-made tracker that makes use of the stock frame, and should be a good reference for future customizers.
