Hex socket bolts are among the most popular fasteners, right alongside Phillips-head screws. These bolts, also known as cap bolts, are typically turned using an L-shaped hex wrench.It’s no exaggeration to say that an L-shaped wrench—with a hexagonal bit at the end of its long and short shafts—is included in virtually every tool set. However, L-shaped wrenches aren’t the only type available. Here, we’ll introduce some hex wrenches that can make your everyday cap bolt tightening tasks even faster.

Here’s How Phillips Screws and Cap Bolts Differ

Cap bolts allow for higher torque than Phillips screws and have smaller heads than hex-head bolts or nuts—these are both their characteristics and advantages.

Phillips screws are the most common type of screw we encounter in our daily lives, not just on motorcycles and cars.Phillips screwdrivers are readily available in DIY tool sets and at 100-yen shops, and their high versatility—with just three bit sizes (#1 to #3) covering the vast majority of screws—is another major appeal.
In contrast, hex socket bolts (cap bolts) are gaining popularity.Cap bolts, which have a hex socket machined into the head, offer several advantages over Phillips screws.

● Cap bolts are less prone to stripping.
When high torque is applied to a Phillips screw, “camming out” occurs—the screwdriver lifts out of the tapered cross-recess.Therefore, it is essential to press the screwdriver firmly against the screw while turning the grip.
In contrast, the hex socket on a cap bolt has no taper angle, so the hex wrench does not lift off the socket, making it less prone to stripping and allowing for the application of high torque.

● Easier to Achieve High Clamping Force
Related to their resistance to stripping when turned with a tool, because they allow for the application of high torque, they are often used in combination with high-strength bolts and are suitable for fastening components in engines, suspensions, and brake systems.

● Smaller head size possible
While standard hex-head bolts can also withstand higher torque than Phillips-head screws, standard hex-head bolts require tools such as wrenches or socket wrenches to be positioned “on the outside” of the head. In contrast,whereas the hex wrench used to turn a cap bolt is inserted “inside the head.” This not only allows for a smaller bolt head but also eliminates the need to account for space around the head for the tool, offering the advantage of enabling a more compact machine design.
For these reasons, cap bolts have gradually replaced Phillips screws.

Why L-shaped hex wrenches are common

Inserting the short shaft into a cap bolt allows you to apply high torque, while inserting the long shaft into the bolt lets you grip the shaft and turn it quickly. If the tip of the long shaft is a tapered ball-point type, you can turn the bolt even when the shaft is angled relative to the hex socket.

The most widely used tool for turning cap bolts—which were developed to meet the need for “high-torque tightening even in tight spaces”—is the L-shaped hex wrench.
As mentioned earlier, to take full advantage of the cap bolt’s ability to be installed in tighter spaces than hex bolts, the tool itself must also be slim and compact. The L-shaped wrench—created by bending a hexagonal bar at a 90-degree angle—was the design that met these requirements in the simplest and most cost-effective way, which is why it has remained in use for many years with virtually no changes.

There are several reasons why this hex wrench settled on this particular shape.

● The long and short shafts allow for both high torque and work in tight spaces
A major feature of the L-shaped hex wrench is that it has two types of hexagonal sections: a long shaft and a short shaft.This allows the distance between the fulcrum and the point of application to be easily adjusted, enabling users to choose the appropriate configuration depending on the task.

Additionally, the “ball-point” type—which features a tapered tip on the long shaft—allows you to turn the wrench while tilting it relative to the screw shaft. This enables continuous turning without having to switch wrenches, even if there are obstructions at the installation site, helping to improve work efficiency.

● Access to deep-set cap bolts is possible
If the bolt is always right in front of you and within reach, the short shaft alone is sufficient; however, if the bolt is located in a recessed area, the long shaft comes in handy. Furthermore, when there are obstacles around the bolt, the long shaft is invaluable because it allows you to operate it from a slight distance.

● Inexpensive to Manufacture
Although this is irrelevant to the user, L-shaped hex wrenches are basically made by simply bending hexagonal stock and heat-treating it. Since they lack a grip like a screwdriver, they can be manufactured inexpensively and are characterized by their durability and resistance to breakage.

If you imagine which would take up more space in a toolbox—10 hex wrenches with screwdriver grips or 10 L-shaped hex wrenches—you’ll understand the advantage of the simple, grip-less L-shape. If you’re adding hex wrenches to your car’s tool kit, the L-shape is definitely the way to go.

For quick tightening, the T-type is definitely the way to go

There are hex bits at both ends of the handle, and the ball lock engages at the center and on both sides, preventing the bits from slipping out.

With so many advantages to an L-shaped hex wrench, it might seem like there’s no other option. However, depending on the location of the cap bolts or the nature of the task, there are other hex wrenches that can be even faster and more efficient than the L-shaped type. One such option is the T-handle hex wrench.
A T-handle wrench is a hand tool that can be used in the same way as a spanner, open-end wrench, or socket wrench when turning hex-head bolts or nuts.

With open-end or box wrenches, you need to reposition the tool at specific angles. While a socket wrench allows you to turn the bolt continuously without removing the socket or bit, the socket stops rotating when you swing the ratchet handle.
In contrast, with a T-handle wrench, you don’t need to remove the wrench from the bolt or nut; simply support the shaft and rotate the handle with your fingers, and the rotation will not stop—just like when using a power impact driver.
All of these advantages also apply to T-type hex wrenches.

L-shaped wrenches also allow for rapid turning if you insert the long shaft into the bolt, but gripping and turning the hex shaft can sometimes cause finger pain (there are also L-shaped wrenches with a round shaft, and that type does not cause pain).Furthermore, when trying to grip the short shaft with your fingers and turn it, the shaft may be too short, causing your hand to slip. In this regard, T-type hex wrenches have a handle wide enough to grip with your fingers, giving them a decisive advantage for high-speed turning tasks.
The Straight brand T-type hex wrench introduced here features a rotating sleeve on the shaft designed for quick turning; by gripping this sleeve and tapping the handle lightly, the tip will continue to spin smoothly. Furthermore, since there are hex bits at both ends of the sliding handle section, it can be used as an L-shaped wrench to apply strong torque.

However, even the shorter handle section is longer than that of a standard L-shaped wrench, so it may not be usable in areas with limited clearance above the cap bolt. Therefore, rather than replacing all L-shaped wrenches, it’s best to use them appropriately for each situation—the T-type for fast-turning tasks and the L-shaped wrench for tight spaces.

By inserting the handle end into the cap bolt, you can use the shaft as a handle to tighten it firmly.

If you support the rotating sleeve and turn the handle, it rotates smoothly without any resistance, making loosening and tightening tasks more efficient than with an L-shaped wrench.

There is also a short-shaft type with short ends on both sides, allowing for continuous work in tight spaces.

It’s true that T-type hex wrenches are difficult to use in tight spaces, and the argument that “L-shaped wrenches are still the best” is valid—but there are situations where standard L-shaped wrenches simply won’t work. When turning a cap bolt by switching between L-shaped hex wrenches, you must rotate the bolt at least 60 degrees to switch wrenches.This is because both the bolt’s hex socket and the wrench’s hex shank have vertices spaced 60 degrees apart.

Therefore, if the bolt is located in a tight space and you cannot secure a 60-degree swing angle for the wrench, you won’t be able to turn it even with an L-shaped wrench.
That’s where a wrench with both ends bent into an L-shape comes in handy.Developed and manufactured by Asahi Metal Industries, a company that produces hex wrenches in various specifications, the Long Daxky Hex Bar Wrench (Double-Ended Bent Type) features an extremely short shank—half the length of a standard L-shaped wrench’s short shaft—which allows for excellent access to tight spaces. Its most distinctive feature is that both ends of the hex shaft are bent.

These ends are bent at different points along the hex shaft, giving the wrench a twisted appearance when viewed on its own.
This difference in the bending positions is the key to the wrench’s design; this shape allows the wrench to be switched out at 30-degree intervals. Being able to turn a cap bolt—which normally requires a 60-degree swing—with just a 30-degree swing greatly improves workability in tight spaces.

By bending one side along the “edge” of the hexagonal bar and the opposite side along the “corner,” you can rotate the main body by 30 degrees, allowing you to turn cap bolts continuously—a feature that proves invaluable in tight spaces.

Since the short shaft is also very short, it allows for precise access to cap bolts installed in situations where there is limited space above them.

Having a variety of tools will definitely expand your range of options

Some hobby mechanics believe that “since I’m not a professional mechanic, a minimal set of tools is sufficient.” There’s also the mindset that even if efficiency isn’t optimal, you can simply take the extra time to complete the job.
However, when you encounter a tool that can drastically shorten a work procedure you’ve always taken for granted, your preconceptions can crumble and your perspective can change dramatically.
