During its first-quarter earnings announcement on May 5th, Harley-Davidson mentioned new models planned for release in 2027 and beyond. Among them, it was revealed that the air-cooled Sportster, which was immensely popular in Japan, will be making a comeback! Furthermore, it's been announced that the price will be around $10,000.

It's Clear Even from the Silhouette: The Air-Cooled Sportster is Back!

The air-cooled Sportster once held a dominant position in Japan, accounting for up to 40% of Harley-Davidson's sales in the country. Even after its production ended with the "Forty-Eight Special Final Edition" in 2022, its popularity has remained high, with well-maintained used models fetching considerable prices.

Now, news has broken that this beloved air-cooled Sportster is set to make a comeback. During the "BACK TO THE BRICKS" growth strategy presentation, revealed at the first-quarter earnings announcement held in the US on May 5th, it was explicitly stated: "We will revive the air-cooled Sportster as a 2027 model."

While the "Sportster S," equipped with the liquid-cooled Revolution Max engine, currently exists, the presentation slide prominently featured "THE RETURN OF SPORTSTER" and "Air-cooled engine." The silhouette revealed is unmistakably that of the Sportster that debuted in 2004, featuring the rubber-mounted Evolution engine. Moreover, the documentation mentions an "Attainable price point (around $10,000)," suggesting that affordability will also be a key factor.

This is the 2021 Sportster Iron 883 model. While there are differences in the single and double seats, the silhouette of the air-cooled V-twin engine, air cleaner, tank, side covers, and exhaust shape are almost identical.

If we brighten the image at the beginning of the article, we can clearly see details like the air-cooled engine fins and the single disc brake. The front turn signals have moved from handlebar mount to fork mount, and the rear fender shape is also slightly different.

Will it be the "883" that Returns?!

Regarding this revived Sportster, other pages in the documentation mention explanations such as "leveraging existing investments" and "not investing in new platforms." This suggests that while the basic structure of the chassis, suspension, and of course, the engine's fundamental configuration—such as the 45-degree bank angle and the 4-cam OHV 2-valve design—will be retained, it will be adapted to comply with the latest regulations like Euro 5+.

Traditionally, the air-cooled Sportster came in two displacements: 1202cc and 883cc. However, based on the discussions during the earnings announcement, there were remarks indicating a focus on an entry-level model with an emphasis on price, suggesting it would likely be the 883. While both the 1200 and 883 Sportster models had their own distinct characteristics and divided preferences, we will have to wait for future announcements regarding this aspect.

In recent years, Harley-Davidson has faced challenges such as declining sales and reduced dealer profitability. As a countermeasure, the "BACK TO THE BRICKS" strategy focuses on expanding its lineup of lower-priced models. Alongside the return of the air-cooled Sportster, the introduction of the oil-cooled engine model "Sprint," priced under $10,000, has also been previewed. Judging by its silhouette, this appears to be a variation of the single-cylinder model "X440" currently offered in markets like India.

While the official launch timing and markets for both models remain undecided, given the immense popularity of the air-cooled Sportster in Japan, its introduction to the Japanese market is almost certain once announced. With the current trend of neo-classic models with round headlights dominating the Japanese market, a new yet familiar contender is poised to make its appearance!
