If you are a Sunday mechanic who likes to tinker with motorcycles, you probably want to do as much of the daily maintenance of your car by yourself as possible. Have you ever had the experience of buying a tire from an online retailer at ...... that you need to change before your next touring trip, but the old tire is hard and difficult to take off and put on? Did you know that the quickest way to warm up tires and wheels in such cases is to let them sit in the sunlight?

Good tire levers are only as good as their ease of use

Dirt Freak's unit brand offers several manual tire changers for off-road users. Here, we took advantage of a tire changer that is large enough to be used on on-road models and can be operated in a standing position.

For tire levers, which are essential when changing tires, we prefer to use the commonly known crank-type tire levers from Daytona. It is easy to hold the bead and easy to use, so we recommend this product.

If your disc rotor or driven sprocket is the type that is fixed to the hub or wheel, you can hook the grips to them after you raise the tire bead to secure it.

On the 180-degree opposite side of the area where you want to raise the bead, use a keeper tool that can keep the bead down. If you have a multi-clamp, you can also push the tire between the clamps.

The importance of the rim band can be understood by the nipple marks on the band and tube.

Dropping the bead on the opposite side of the bead raising area makes bead raising easier than you might imagine. After raising the bead on one side, pull out the tube and check the condition. Be careful if the spoke nipple marks are still strongly visible on the rim band or tube.

For iron rim models, make sure to check the inside of the rim for red rust formation and erosion. There was no rust on the back of the steel rims on this vehicle because it had not been used in the rain and was stored in a garage. Soapy water used during assembly can affect the rust.

Tire mount lube and bead cream to improve slippage are essential.

For steel-rimmed models, make sure to check the inside of the rim for red rust formation and erosion. There was no rust on the back of the steel rims on this vehicle because it had not been used in the rain and was stored in a garage. Soapy water used during assembly may have affected the rust.

In the past, "soapy water" was the lubricant of choice when changing tires, but soapy water can cause rust if it remains inside the rim. Here, a liquid spray tire mounting lube was used.

The spray type is easy to use but wastes a lot of spray ....... Spray the tire bead sides and edges, as well as the rim side edges. I also sprayed the tube and stretched it with a rag.

An air valve puller is definitely helpful when incorporating a tire tube! No more getting your fingertips caught between the tire and the rim. A valve core removal tool is also essential.

Insert the tip of the valve puller through the valve hole and out through the rim bead section, then screw the puller tip into the air valve on the tube. Pull the wire out to reveal the valve fitting.

The shape varies by type, but by pulling the wire out while pushing in the air valve fitting on the tube, the valve fitting comes out into the valve hole on the rim. This is easy to use!!!

Tube mis-assembly can trigger a puncture!

There is one nut on the valve fitting on the tube side and one nut for fixing it to the rim hole, but do not tighten the rim hole fixing nut from the beginning and set it just enough to prevent the valve fitting from falling into the hole.

With the valve core (commonly known as the bug) not set, compressed air is fed into the tube with an air gun. Before installing the tire, it is important to inject air temporarily.

Once the tube is inflated to a certain degree, check it by touching the entire circumference of the tube with your fingertips. If the tube is kinked inside the tire, it will cause a puncture later on.

Over-insertion and mishandling of the tire lever can cause a puncture!

There are various types of bead-down keepers, so use the one that is easy to use. By using a keeper to prevent the bead from coming up on the tire, the workability will be greatly improved.

The tire lever should not be plunged deep into the rim edge. If the tube gets caught in the lever, it could cause a puncture. Again, using a bead-down keeper will make the job easier.

The trick to smooth bead raising is to re-apply mounting lube or bead cream between the bead and the rim edge before air injection. Inject air carefully.

As the tire expands, a line on the side of the bead can be visually confirmed. The appearance of this line is a good indicator, but some tire models do not have a line. Check how the bead rises on the left and right side of the tire by looking at the line.

To best balance the tire assembly, align the light sky mark with the air valve. After filling the air valve to the specified amount, loosen the nut and visually check that the valve does not fall at an angle. If the tube is pulled to one side when assembling the tube, it will stick in the tire. An unbalanced push can also cause a puncture.

We were asked to perform maintenance on a motorcycle that had been hibernating for over a decade in order to get it back on the road. The undercarriage condition showed that the tires were hard and the drive chain was completely free of oil. The first thing we did was to change the tires, but there are more important points to keep in mind, especially for vehicles with spoke wheels on steel rims, than for aluminum wheels. For steel rims, the inside of the rim may have rusted bright red due to moisture intrusion. Rusting may also occur easily depending on storage conditions. In particular, there are cases where rain runs down the spokes and enters the tire through a small gap in the nipple hole. This can cause the inside of the rim to rust bright red.
In addition, the use of soapy water during a previous tire change may have caused rusting due to the residual moisture. Therefore, try to avoid rust by using oil products called spray tire mounting lube, bead cream, or bead wax for lubrication during tire replacement.
POINT
  • Point 1・When removing and installing tires, do not rush the work and use warm sunlight=sunshine is effective.
  • Point 2・Rubber and steel parts are slippery and not easy to work with, so be sure to use tire mounting lube or bead cream.
  • Point 3・Tire beads must be evenly distributed or tire rolling will be if the tire bead is not evened out the tire roll will be unbalanced.
Carefully check the tire tube and rim band that was removed when the tire was changed. What is the condition of the inner diameter where it touches the spoke nipple? If the nipple is hitting hard, it is a good idea to wrap a couple of rounds of cloth duct tape around the nipple area after covering it with the rim band. By wrapping and securing it tightly over the rim band, you can avoid the protrusion of the nipple. If the contact with the nipple is too strong, it can damage the tube and cause a puncture. Also, every two tire changes or so, and if the bike has not been ridden for a long period of time, be sure to replace the tire tube and rim band at the same time the tire is changed.
When replacing a tire, expose the new tire to the sun beforehand to warm and soften the tire, making it easier to install on the wheel and rim. Even if the old tires are stiff and hard, warming them up in the sun before the work makes the old tires softer and easier to remove than one might imagine.A manual tire changer that allows you to change tires from a standing position is useful for this type of work.
This manual type tire changer is a very useful product for the Sunday mechanic, as it is unstable and tiring to work with both feet on the ground, placing the wheel on top of a stack of old tires.
