YOSHIMURA's PRO-GRESS3 Wideband A/F Meter got a lot of attention at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show and Taste of Tsukuba event this year. This meter allows the user to check the air-fuel ratio at a glance, and the product, which was announced to go on sale this summer, is now finally available for order. We have previously introduced it on Webike Plus, but would like to reiterate how appealing this product is.

What is the advantage of knowing the air-fuel ratio in the first place?
This is the third product in the PRO-GRESS series. The "PRO-GRESS1 Temp-Volt Meter" (temperature and voltage) and the "PRO-GRESS2 Multi-Temp Meter" (simultaneously displays temperature, voltage, and clock) have continued to evolve, and now the air-fuel ratio (A/F) can also be displayed.
What is so exciting about knowing the air-fuel ratio?
Generally, in a gasoline engine, 14.7 grams of air is considered appropriate for every 1 gram of gasoline burned. This is called the "theoretical air-fuel ratio," and it is the standard value for setting the intake and exhaust from the standpoint of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. There is another concept called the "output air-fuel ratio," which is around 13 grams of air for every 1 gram of gasoline burned, making it less air than the theoretical air-fuel ratio. This makes the air mixture richer and simply increases the engine's output. However, in exchange for better acceleration, it has the disadvantage of lower fuel efficiency and worse exhaust emissions. You may have heard the terms "rich gasoline" and "lean gasoline," which refer to this air-fuel ratio. The air-fuel ratio changes depending on the weather and temperature, not to mention carburetor settings and exhaust replacement, and neither too rich nor too thin is good for the bike. This is where a meter that shows the air-fuel ratio at a glance comes in very handy.

Wideband enables measurement of a wide range of air-fuel ratios
One of the main features of the PRO-GRESS3 Wideband A/F Meter is the "wideband" in the product name. The terms "narrowband" and "wideband" are used to describe the range over which the A/F ratio can be measured. Narrowband measurements are accurate within a specific range (close to AFR 14.7:1), but outside of this range, the accuracy drops dramatically. On the other hand, wideband allows accurate A/F ratio measurements over a wide range, making it easier to measure one's ideal A/F ratio.
In addition to wideband measurement, this product simultaneously displays the air-fuel ratio in numerical (display range: 10.0-18.0) and graphical (display range: 11.0-15.9) form. The excellent visibility means that the air-fuel ratio can be checked stress-free while riding.

Service to support sensor boss installation
This product has been developed specifically for motorcycles, so waterproofing and vibration-resistance have not been compromised. The compact meter is mounted near the handlebars and can be installed via a special carbon meter bracket.
However, the A/F sensor needs to be installed on the exhaust pipe, which generally requires customization, and many aftermarket exhausts are not equipped with a mounting boss for the sensor. Therefore, YOSHIMURA plans to offer a service to modify such exhausts so that the sensor can be installed. Of course, the service will be available not just for YOSHIMURA exhausts, but also exhausts from other manufacturers, and preparations are currently underway.
