OHNO SPEED's KATANA
"It's a Type II with Type I specs," says Mr. Ohno of OHNO SPEED. "I was curious about the differences between the Type II (M2) and the Type I (M0) when the M2 was released, so I bought the bike. I found that the stock silver model had the SUZUKI logo changed from red to black, matching the color of our complete build. So, I thought I could make it complete right away by just transplanting parts, and I installed the parts I had on the M0 onto this bike. While the M2 has various electrical system changes, the chassis and suspension are quite similar to the M0. So, I transplanted the front forks and wheels from the M0 as well. That's why the outer tubes of the front forks are black, which is the stock color of the M0 (M2 has a gold outer tube)". Just to clarify, the M0 refers to the 2019 modern KATANA, while the M2 is the model that received a minor update in '22, with enhancements in electronic controls and throttle changes. Returning to this M2, it's equipped with various original KATANA parts from OHNO SPEED. This includes a titanium-coated windshield, a clutch holder that makes operation smoother, and a short-type Aragosta rear shock that offers better footing and a natural feel. They've also incorporated a GT tail cowl that provides a sleek, retro look while featuring a storage compartment. The handlebars are the KATANA's standard high-tapered bars, maintaining that classic feel.
"M2 also has the same high-type tapered handlebars as the M0, so I've tilted them as close as possible. It's so that your hand doesn't get caught on the tank cover when you turn the handlebars. The M2 has a lighter clutch than the M0. But when I tried our original clutch, it became significantly lighter. The GT tail cowl was also installed smoothly. The KATANA was designed for city riding, where you might not need to carry much. However, we considered adding some cargo capacity, and its usable for both the M0 and M2, which is a good thing." These OHNO SPEED originals seem to be effective parts even on the M2. So, how about the chassis and suspension, which are said to be quite similar for both the M0 and M2? "This time, we've replaced the front disc with Brembo ones. They really bite and provide excellent braking power, so I highly recommend them. The rear suspension is said to be hard, but in fact, the shock itself is soft. I think this perception might be due to the linkage setup prioritizing pillion riding, and the engine and FI tuning emphasizing fuel efficiency. There may be differences in the way manufacturers and shops like ours approach a bike, but rather than saying one is better or worse, understanding different perspectives can make it easier to grasp how to work on and set up a bike. So, when we installed this shock (OHNO SPEED x Aragosta) with extended front forks and adjusted the front and rear heights, it created a well-balanced and moderated suspension setup. This setup works well for both the M0 and M2. In the future, we're considering prototyping a linkage for it and making it available for sale." As you can see with this bike, OHNO SPEED's M0 parts are also compatible with the M2. That's a big plus. Just like with the air-cooled Katana, OHNO SPEED's parts are continuously tested in real-world riding, and this is reflected in their quality. KATANA owners can benefit from this, as they're validated through real-world use.
Handle
The handlebars are the stock high-type tapered bars, pulled back and set up so that the grips are closer. The steering stem, meter, and mirrors remain stock, with the addition of a drive recorder (the switch is visible on the left side of the handlebars).
The clutch holder is OHNO SPEED's "Light Clutch Holder" (photo shows the limited black edition, also available in standard colors, requires separately purchased machined mirror holder). The front master cylinder is a stock M2 master cylinder.
Bodyworks
The OEM polycarbonate meter visor is secured with the KATANA standard visor. OHNO SPEED's Titanium Coated Windshield (made to order) adds not only the necessary feel to the KATANA but also enhances the wind deflection effect by ensuring thickness while providing a stylish appearance with its titanium coating.
The swingarm-mounted rear fender was removed, and the Daytona EDGE Fender Eliminator Kit was smartly installed under the GT tail cowl. OHNO SPEED also offers a 'Fender Eliminator Attachment' for this purpose.
By replacing four exterior parts of the tail section (L/R side covers, under cover, top cover) and extending the tail light harness, you can create a neat appearance. Additionally, the "GT Tail Cowl Base Kit" allows you to create storage spaces in the rear and both sides of the seat for small items. The top cover at the rear of the seat is designed to be opened by removing the seat and using hand screws to provide internal security.
With the seat removed, there's space not only in the tail section but also behind the side covers that can be utilized with some creativity.
Chassis
The φ43mm upside down forks and 3.50-17/6.00-17 size wheels were replaced with stock M0 forks and wheels, and the front fork outer tubes were changed from M2 gold to M0 black. The front calipers are stock Brembo, but the front ø310mm discs were changed to Brembo T-drives for improved effectiveness and feel.
The rear brake, including the caliper and disc, remains stock. The swingarm, linkage, and tire fender are also stock, with the swingarm-mounted rear fender having been removed.
The rear shock is the fully adjustable OHNO SPEED original Aragosta. They've installed the TYPE-R version with a remote adjuster here (the TYPE-S version without a remote adjuster is also available). The seat height (stock at 825mm) is lowered by 15mm, enhancing stability and improving ride comfort without sacrificing performance.
